a new art department: american vogue

Since the design director Danko Steiner , left American Vogue and was replaced with Raul Martinez, there has been MAJOR NOTICBLE changes in the art direction of American Vogue. New fonts, and having photographers photograph features and editorials they wouldnt normaly shoot has created a totally diffrent look for American Vogue so far. Example 1 is the March editorial "Pitch Perfect"

Maybe its just the white background ( which is also a huge change) but it is sooooooo French Vogue, especially the opening shot with the shoes. Could easily fit in with any Bijioux feature. I also notice a lot less photoshop, Trentini has freckles and they are appropriatley here, without making her face look picture perfect. The fonts I also notice they tend to use, such as thin Helvetica's and fonts with sharper and longer serifs. Theres also more 90's style covers, with modern color and text placement. Example #2: Febuary and March issues of American Vogue which emulate a sunset style backdrop.

Its nice to see that they are experimenting with the magazine. The layouts are a lot less cluttered and more freeform, and allows my eye to focus on the essential elements, such as pictures, while still being able to appreciate the type. Not so sure about seeing a Rosewood or Stencil font on the cover like Vogue Italia, but hopefully the experimentation can last long enough for when I start working in the art department! ;D
